Tutoring

I offer online and home-based one-to-one tuition to A level, GCSE and IGCSE students and to students focused on entrance examinations to preparatory and secondary schools. Most parents taking on a tutor are looking for someone to support their child who is under-achieving in mainstream education or who want a short term targeted focus on examination skills.

I can deliver entire English and English Literature courses as well as revision sessions as examinations approach.

Why might you need a tutor?

There are three main reasons why parents might need a tutor.

  1. Missing out. Sometimes a child has not grasped some important element of their learning. This might be through absence or because there were not enough opportunities to practice (sometimes we just have to keep doing the same thing, or variations on it, in order to learn). It might be a whole text your child didn’t get because they missed the significance of something crucial that happened early on. If it’s Shakespeare, perhaps there’s a difficulty with the language. It is amazing how quickly some students – not everyone, I know that – an suddenly find they ‘get’ Shakespeare if we approach it at the right pace and in a way that works for them. Likewise, some children don’t get poetry because they read it line by line (instead of sentence by sentence). Some children just need to be shown what to look for to understand sentences in literature that seem to make not sense at first. I can help with all that.
  2. Special Educational Needs. Some children have Special Educational Needs, whether Statemented or not. Autism and Dyslexia, for example, are not either or conditions, like pregnancy. Many students can be mildly affected in ways that affect some or all areas of their learning. I have over thirty years experience helping children with differing degrees of dyslexia and autism with a range of strategies that I can adapt to help individual students achieve the very best they can.
  3. Inadequately resourced schools. Like it or not, not all schools have resources to meet the individual needs of all their learners. Class sizes may be too big. Sometimes schools do not have sufficient resources to cope with the behavioural difficulties of children who interrupt the learning of others. I could go on. You could go on. The fact is, if the school isn’t meeting your child’s needs now, they may need help. Most of us only get one chance at education and one shot at the exams. We can keeping asking the school for as long as we like to put things right. If they haven’t go the resources, they won’t be able to.  Targeted tuition as soon as you see there is a problem will make sure your child achieves the highest level they can.

I can help . . .

“I cannot express enough how grateful and lucky I am to have found Richard . . . His enthusiasm for English literature is both deeply inspiring and highly motivating. The patience he repeatedly demonstrated together with his ability to explain things to me succinctly and clearly made even the most challenging areas exciting and fun. A great communicator when it comes to the practical things as well, Richard was always timely and flexible if I had questions or needed to change our tutoring times. The supportive encouragement I had from Richard this year combined with his outstanding teaching skills helped me improve my marks while also making the process of essay writing not just easier to understand, but even a true joy to complete. Thank you, Richard.”

“My son has been nothing but impressed by the help and support he`s been given. My son is very confident that Richard will be able to help him raise his grade when he comes to take his A levels next year.

It`s also been amazingly easy for them to have Skype lessons as we don`t live too close. Which is an added bonus.”
